Time estimates for the four matching I1 haplogroup lineages
We now have time estimates for the new sub branches to our I-Y22033 overall Runciman SNP (this prior post refers).
They come from the new YFull.com tree, version 5.03.
YFull also provide a different name for the Alexander of Meikle Pinkerton SNP branch - I-A11393, compared to FTDNA's I-A11400.
The overall I-Y22033 has moved back 50 years from 550 to 600 ybp (years before present, where present = 1950)
Annotating the above with the known information re the lineages' most distant known ancestors and the most recent common ancestor (MRCA) between the pairs on the sub branches:
Bear in mind that a SNP mutation can occur at any generation down from the MRCA to the test taker.
Looking back to the STR results to 67 markers for David (R-1) and Jerald (R-2) the 4th cousins once removed sharing I-A11399, they share 66 of the 67 tested markers, differing only on DYS481 (24 vs 25 repeats). The Time Predictor at FTDNA shows a 71% probability of them sharing a common ancestor within 6 generations given it was known they did not share an ancestor within 4 generations.

New I1 branches for RUNCIMAN
Check out the abbreviated I1 tree in the Haplogroup section of DNASurnames, particularly the I1 RUNCIMAN branch I-Y22033 aka I-A9096
FTDNA have revised their I1 tree after analysing the 6 RUNCIMAN BigY results and we now have two subclades under I-Y22033,
Waiting for YFull.com to catch up once they've analysed the remaining two BigY kits, which will be some weeks away yet, and to provide some time estimates to the new subclades.
The overall I-Y22033 branch still contains Lineages 1b (William of Crail) and 1c (Thomas of Dunbar)
As at mid Feb 2017:

- direct male line Runciman male willing to take the plunge and see what science can add to our knowledge of the assorted Runciman families by testing yDNA - preferably the yDNA67 test at FamilyTreeDNA, currently on sale?
For this test it is recommended that we have two tests per line, one each from distant cousins from the progenitor. There's not much point in testing closely related cousins/siblings/parent-child pairs for yDNA without a really good reason.
For the first of the line to test significant subsidies may be available, along with sale vouchers that give more $$ off than the already discounted prices.
Or
- any descendant of anyone with a Runciman ancestor to test FamilyFinder (also on sale at the moment).
For this one the more the merrier as the autosomal DNA (atDNA) involved is rather randomly inherited and it takes more work to prove which ancestral line a specific bit of DNA has been inherited from. Older generations best to be tested first as their DNA reaches back that extra generation or two.

Lineage 1 (Haplogroup I1) Y-DNA111 markers
Three of the four BigY tested RUNCIMeN from Lineage 1 now have their yDNA STR results from the YFull analysis of their BigY files.
Those on the panel from yDNA67 to yDNA111 have now been extracted for the three so far available and included on the overall result grid on DNASurnames.
YFull.com also give you your closest STR matches, and it is reassuring to see that these three are their closest matches over the 400+ STRs compared - and somewhat expected given they're on their own little branch of the yDNA tree :)

And with a second leap ...
Processing of all four of the BigY kits for our Lineage 1 (Haplogroup I1) proceeds through YFull with the terminal SNP remaining at I-Y22033.
Behind the scenes the STR results are gradually being added which will give us the Y-DNA111 markers for all four of our representatives.
With the latest version of the YFull tree we seem to have jumped a further 200 years towards the present, as the TMRCA (time to the most recent common ancestor) is now 550 years instead of the 750 before all four had fully finished the SNP processing.

Runcimans can leap centuries at a single bound !
aka BigY update.
You may recall that our matching Lineage 1 lines were stuck at a haplogroup of I-Z60*, ie negative for known subgroups, this branch of the yDNA haplogroup of mankind being given as forming 4,700 years ago, with 4,300 years to the most recent common ancestor.
Two of the lines had completed processing at YFull, and a third uploaded but not yet complete.
That's the old news.
YFull have published a revised tree:
You will note that there's a new sub branch for I-Z60.
Time to most recent common ancestor for our trio has leapt from 4,300 to "only" 750 years ago.
Lineage 1c's YF06319 has not yet completed processing but there's obviously enough information already analysed to create our own subbranch, SNP I-Y22033 which he shares with the already complete Lineage 1b (William of Crail) and 1d (Alexander of Meikle Pinkerton).
The BAM file for the fourth lineage (1a, Wanton Walls line) has now arrived, and YFull provided with the link today.
Possibly a little optimistic to expect yet another new SNP and a leap to 400 years ago?

BigY update/Sale time
Two of the BigY kits have now completed at least their preliminary placement on the YFull.com tree.
Still both at I-Z60*.
The third, Jim (R-10) 's has only just started processing atYFull.
Our fourth BigY test results are expected next month from FTDNA.
David's has yet to finish the remainder of the processing at YFull, and the YFull tree version recently published only included kits prior to his, so we still live in hope that refinements of the I-Z60 tree will ensue.
All of this activity is on the matching RUNCIAMN lineages in the I1 haplogroup.
What about the R1b RUNCIMANs?
The current Father's day sale at FamilyTreeDNA would be a good time to get all at at least the same level of testing (Y-DNA67) for better comparisons.

Thank you to the generous donations after a plea on our RUNCIMAN Group on Facebook, we have now ordered a BigY test for another of the matching I1 haplogroup lines.
That's three of the four now represented.
One, Kevin, for the William of Crail lineage 1b is fully processed and analysed and awaiting more data at YFull.
The second, David, for the Alexander of Meikle Pinkerton lineage 1d has been processed at FamilyTreeDNA where we are awaiting the file needed for the next stage of the process needed for the analysis at YFull.
And now one has been ordered for Jim, representing Thomas of Dunbar, lineage 1c.
which leaves the Wanton Walls line to be represented - next sale?
Once all four are in, hopefully before, we should have a much better idea of when these lines actually branched into our RUNCIMAN specific lines on the Y-DNA tree of mankind.

GOONS
No, not Neddie Seagoon et al, for those of you old enough to remember them.
A recent initiative by the Guild of One Name Studies (with whom the RUNCIMAN Surname One Name Study is registered) is to provide web hosting to registered members, and include maintenance of such sites when members can no longer do so.
Although this is only a trial (until Jun 2016), it seemed a good opportunity to turn my previous statement in the ONS Site About page that promised the ability for those interested in the RUNCIMAN surname to be able to contribute their own trees, in an easily replaced/refreshed format via GEDCom, instead of only my research being published on the ONS pages.
Have a read of the revised About page and see if this is for you.
It does not replace the use of WikiTree, nor the current One Name Study pages - horses for courses, each have their strengths.
That aside, the ONS pages have been refreshed, including a tweak or two to the Links page, and any revisions to lineages that wont show up in the latest changes lists.
The new GOONS version of the Runciman ONS pages have been "seeded" with the first two lineages - my Wanton Walls line, and that of Alexander of Meikle Pinkerton. More to come.
It's always an interesting exercise preparing/checking information for a new site.

Most, if not all, are part of a tidyup to ensure WikiTree is the WebLink provided given that's where most of our collaborative RUNCIMAN activity is these days.
Have YOU included your RUNCIMAN data there and connected up your pedigree to any existing trees as appropriate?
The Descendant Charts however are likely to contain updates, just not indexed as such, and you will notice that each place mentioned on a person's page now has little place icons.
If two icons exist they should work well, the first to Google maps, the second to OpenStreetMap, but if there's only one, it's currently a bit hit or miss as to where you'll land up in the world - being worked on :)

Who was Ann WESTMINSTER?
A tidy up of the FamilySearch Family Tree for Elizabeth FAMILTON and William RUNCIMAN's family led me to a suggested duplicate as a candidate to merge.
A William RUNCIMAN was indexed as marrying an Ann WESTMINSTER 20 May 1784 St Botolph, Aldersgate, London.
Who were they? Who was she?
The only candidate I had for William in this timeframe/place was married on the same day, same place, to an Elizabeth Campbell MILLINGTON.
The actual entry was re-checked from the London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 images on ancestry from the London Metropolitan Archives.
It reads:
William Runciman of the Parish of Saint Ann Westminster in the County of Middlesex a bachelor and Elizabeth Millington of this Parish Spinster .....
Answer: she doesn't exist.
But Elizabeth Campbell MILLINGTON did

New Y-DNA results on modal for I1 group
Check out the Summary DNA page for our latest set of Y-DNA results - page down to the pedigree linked table.
Runciman (R-20), another descendant of William of Crail (lineage 1b), has tested to Y-DNA67 and turns out to be an exact match to Jerry, R-2 from lineage 1a.
Updates to other pages will follow in due course.

RUNICIONAN
Not quite another Inventive Indexing entry, as in this case it is actually how the original document has Runciman spelt.
Thanks to Sandra for joining the dots to identify that Netty PAINE daughter of John RUNICIONAN and "unknown", was actually Janet, daughter of John RUNCIMAN and Jean ANDERSON.
(The family emigrated from Berwickshire, sailing on the "Charlotte Harrison" which arrived in New York in July 1851, and settled in Ohio. They belong to the line of James RUNCIMAN & Agnes HERRIOT, lineage 2a on the One Name Study pages - LIH)

Yes we're still here
Lack of postings doesn't mean a lack of activity.
On the Y-DNA front results are in from another line of "William of Crail", thankfully not showing any blips along the direct male line Y-DNA front.
The DNA project pages have been updated to include results for Alan (R-17).
Interestingly, still no distinct marker that can be used to identify just William of Crail's male descendants.
The recent BigY discount offering at FamilyTreeDNA has been used as an opportunity to upgrade the kit of our Lineage 1 SNP testing guineapig (Kevin) and remove the need to painstakingly test SNP by SNP as we march towards the present down the I1 haplotree.
If you recall, we had already reached down as far as Z60, which the YFull chart (follow the Z60 link) shows as having already identified some descendant branches now estimated to be only 350 YBP (years before present) - hasn't the knowledge of the tree of mankind advanced amazingly since we all started this DNA journey!
Wouldn't it be fantastic if over time we could prove when all four of the matching known lineages branched off the overall tree.
Keep an eye on both the ISOGG and the YFull trees for the advances in overall knowledge, and here for the RUNCIMAN part of it.

The descendant charts associated with Alexander & Janet (HENDRIE) RUNCIMAN of Meikle Pinkerton, and therefore also that of Thomas and Jane/Jean (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN have been updated to include a newly confirmed twig down from the latter's son Thomas who married Mary REDPATH.

The overall dna grid on the Supplementary DNA pages has been updated to show the full (Y-DNA67) results for the descendant of George & Janet (DARLING) RUNCIMAN.
Looks like we may finally have broken the jinx of the mismatches between the assumed and papertrail descendants of Thomas and Jane (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN.
The "assumed" parentage status for the link from George to Thomas has been removed on the strength of the results to date.
Jere (R-18)and David (R-19) both match Peter (R-12) with 460 = 11, which is looking to become the defining marker for the family of Thomas and Jane (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN.
Summary result pages also updated.
Can we complete the picture for Thomas and Jean (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN with representatives from the families of Robert and Agnes (KING) RUNCIMAN and Alexander and Joan (MANDERSON) RUNCIMAN?
And another candidate from the family of William and Janet (PAXTON) RUNCIMAN?

And now for George
Y-DNA results are beginning to arrive in for the descendant of George & Janet (DARLING) RUNCIMAN who kindly agreed to be a representative for this line.
Early days, but so far we do know that he is a 12/12 match to all bar one of Lineage 1 (11/12 to another of the lines assumed to be down from Thomas and Jane (SIMPSON) RUNCIMAN).

Intriguingly he is also showing a FamilyFinder match to two of those in the RUNCIMAN project, Kevin (R-8) in Lineage 1b and RJW (R-11) in Lineage 1c.
Way more work needed to figure out whether this match is just coincidence (Identical by State rather than Descent) and whether or not the match is actually on the RUNCIMAN line.
Should any RUNCIMAN descendant wish to add to our data, but feel excluded by the fact that they are not from the direct male line, don't despair, register for the Runciman Surname DNA project and order a FamilyFinder test.
Who knows what connections might be revealed!
